The Meaning of Soft Skills

So what are soft skills and why are they in demand from every single employer?

Soft skills are what define our ability to communicate and interact with other people.

They're the non-technical skills that play a very critical role when it comes to teamwork, problem-solving, time management, adaptability, interpersonal and leadership skills.

On the opposite spectrum, hard skills, are the technical skills a person has. Skills such as woodworking, writing, coding… Most jobs are created with hard skills at the forefront as the basic requirement.

Let’s continue talking about soft skills.

So let’s say you’re at work. If you play well with others and contribute to a project’s success, chances are, you have good soft skills. You were able to communicate well, voice your concerns, and really help keep your team’s morale high.

The same goes for your team’s project failure. Sure, the morale may not be as high, but if you played well wither your team, tried the best you could, and softened the blows. As long as you help maintain and build a positive environment for you and your colleagues, your soft skills are at a very commendable height. It means you value growth and professionalism.

This is why employers look for people with great soft skills. They’re able to adapt and be flexible in different situations.

These skills are transferable to different types of work, especially if you’re an entrepreneur or run your own business. The ability to communicate with your clients is very important.

The opposite of having good soft skills is if instead, you start yelling, give up without trying, or show passive aggressiveness, maybe even starting fights.

Do a self-check and ask yourself if you’re doing the right or wrong things that help you and your team to progress.

If you have to question an answer, then you should really think about what you need to do to improve.

Picture yourself as the employer. Wouldn’t you want to work with someone who is easy to communicate with and values a good relationship? Wouldn’t you want to pay someone if they help make your job easier and maybe help you grow?

Also on the contrary, would you want to work with someone who doesn’t care about the job, or may even be very destructive to the work environment?

All these things matter to the person you are working with and to the people that they’re working with. It is very possible to remove the bad habits and implement new and good ones. That’s what we call self-growth!
